Our Past Projects

West Hampstead Synagogue - Restoration

Artemis Conservation's project manager, John Hoath, brought us in to assess a large stained glass window (3320w x 4420h) in a synagogue. The window had been installed in a flimsy metal frame that couldn't withstand high winds. While a new framing system was being designed and installed, we cleaned and repaired the lead panels and made some alterations to the borders. The stunning window depicts Jerusalem and dominates the West elevation.

Elmstead Market - Conservation

Twelve years ago, three windows in a remote church were damaged and repaired with thick protective plate glass. The South Choir window was damaged again, making it necessary to dismantle the panel for repair.

Due to the distortion caused by the external impact, it was releaded, but with an appropriate lead section, more akin to that of the original ancient glazing. Wire guards and bespoke ferramenta sets were added to protect the newly repaired panel.

Pre Conservation Spider Web:

Due to previous damage, the South Choir window was heavily over-leaded. Broken pieces of glass were leaded with 10mm round section lead, making the diamond quarries illegible.

Post Conservation:

The distorted panel was dismantled to access the newly broken pieces. The broken pieces were reassembled into the original arrangement of diamond quarries with basic architectural fleurs de Lys and plain red borders.

External Security:

We added an inter-space between the protective system and the leaded glazing, with wire guards and bespoke ferramenta sets.

This was ventilated by removing a few small, previously inserted, modern replacement pieces at the top and bottom, then added the wire guards and ferramenta for a belt-and-braces protection system.

Theydon Mount, All Saints - Internally-Ventilated Environmentally Protected Glazing System (EPG)

This 16th-century set of 4 heraldic shields and quarry clusters on the west-facing window was in danger of further decay due to the failure of previously used adhesives and water and insect ingress between the plated glass sections.  Thanks to successful fundraising, we were able to unpick the previous work and re-assemble them into the more legible and cohesive artifacts that we fitted back into the window along with external protection and internal ventilation.

Great Dunmow, Essex - Domestic Stained Glass Windows

This project involved two households. One of them had a lady who moved out of the house but wanted to take her front door window with her. The window had a beautifully detailed painted scene that needed to be adjusted in size to fit her new door. The new residents wanted to replace the window with something equally colourful and intricate. To achieve that, we used the patterns from the Victorian tiled path leading to the front door as a reference for the borders. We made the central area light-emitting, with a floral motif of streaky glass, to emphasise them in their plain background, along with painted motifs in the top corners, also taken from the tiles.
